A Short History of The Chemistry Department at UT Dallas
Southwest Center for Advanced Studies
UT Dallas owes its existence to three visionaries, Eugene McDermott, J. Erik Jonsson and Cecil Green. They deeply valued education and entrepreneurial activity. These men, who also founded Texas Instruments, found themselves importing talent from outside the state while the region’s brightest young people pursued education elsewhere.
The Founding Chemistry Faculty at UT Dallas
- MS program, 1972
- Upper-division undergraduates, 1975
- Doctor of Chemistry, 1983
- First freshman students, 1990

Alan G. MacDiarmid NanoTech Institute
In 2001, Ray Baughman and Anvar Zakhidov were recruited from Honeywell International to establish the NanoTech Institute at UT Dallas. Ray was named as UTD’s first Robert A. Welch Professor in Chemistry
Advanced Imaging Research Center
The Advanced Imaging Research Center (AIRC) was established in 2005 as a joint effort between UT Southwestern Medical Center, UT Dallas & UT Arlington to offer state-of-the-art imaging equipment to basic science, engineering, and medical faculty from all three institutions.
