Breakage: Procedures and charges

Replacements for broken items may be obtained from the stockroom. A list of charges for each student will be kept in the stockroom until the end of each semester. Students will be required to pay those charges at the Bursar Office before semester grades will be released.

Equipment allocation and return

At the beginning of each lab course, the student will be assigned a locked drawer complete with the glassware and supplies for which the student will be responsible for the entire semester. At the end of the course, the stockroom manager will inventory each drawer and charge the student’s account for missing/damaged items. Students will be required to pay the charges at the Bursar Office.

Laboratory instruments

Student use

  • Students MAY NOT use any lab instruments without the instructor’s approval that they are familiar with the proper operational techniques and precautions.
  • Malfunction or breakage of lab instruments must be reported to the instructor IMMEDIATELY upon discovery. Speedy reporting will facilitate the repair and return of the instrument to service. The time you save may be your own.

Lab Etiquette

Cleanliness has many merits

  • It means that your glassware items are always ready for use, which saves you time.
  • It reduces the possibilities of sample contamination, which saves you grade points.
  • A tidy work area is a less dangerous place to function, which saves your skin or other features of your anatomy or apparel.
  • It eliminates a major source of friction between you and your colleagues, which saves your friends. It will be demanded by your instructor!

Punctuality

  • The undergraduate labs are not “open labs.” That is, the student may work in them at the assigned lab hours and only under proper supervision. Thus, students must make the best possible use of the time available to them to complete their experiments.
  • Punctuality in arrival and commencing work is thus a rewarding attribute. In fact, it is hardly worth noting because the vast majority of students have no trouble arriving on time. However, there is always a minority who have trouble leaving on time. May we recommend that you resist the (otherwise commendable) urge to start a procedure in your experiment if it will require longer than the time remaining in the lab period to bring it to a conclusion. Please leave some time available at the end of the period to dismantle, clean and store your equipment in an orderly fashion.

Check-in procedure

  • Obtain your drawer assignment and keys from the instructor.
  • Check the equipment in the drawers against the equipment list. Do not assume that the equipment is complete. Do not accept broken or inferior items.
  • Return extra items to the stockroom. Obtain any missing items from the stockroom attendant.
  • Complete and sign the equipment list check-in form and return it to the stockroom. (Note that your signature on this form indicates that you have examined the drawers and assume responsibility for their contents.)
  • Sign and date your acknowledgment of having understood the safety manual.
  • Lock the drawers at the end of each laboratory session and return the keys to the keyboard.
